Wimbledon Embraces Video Review System in 2025.

The Championships court with replay system

Wimbledon will follow the US and Australian Opens in utilizing replay systems.

Replay systems will make its debut at Wimbledon in the upcoming tournament.

Competitors are granted the ability to challenge certain calls made by the official, echoing the system already in operation at both the US Open and the Aussie major.

This innovation is slated for use on Centre Court and the number one court throughout the Championships and on the remaining show courts when they are staging singles contests.

This move arrives only a year after the All England Club introduced electronic line calling, which terminated the centuries-old tradition of line judges.

Scope of Challenges

Competitors cannot to dispute the call of the ELC system, but they can ask for the umpire to re-examine specific situations, including:

  • Whether a ball has bounced twice.
  • If a shot touched an opponent's racquet or person during play.
  • Potential interference at the conclusion of a rally.

Importantly, there is no limit on the amount of challenges a player can initiate.

Practical Application

A recent case occurred in a recent tournament last week, where a top player initiated the video challenge against Jack Draper.

Draper conceded it was a difficult call for the umpire, but thought his rival had "used the regulations effectively."

Official Aurelie Tourte viewed a replay and ruled the player was guilty of interference, granting the rally to Medvedev.

Growing Trend

Video reviews are not exclusive to Grand Slams. It has been in use at the American major since 2023 and the Australian Open since 2025.

Additionally, it is becoming more common on the WTA circuit, and by next season the men's ATP Tour will have video reviews implemented at every one of its tournaments.

Other Changes

Another innovation at The Championships this year will be the introduction of graphical cues on scoreboards to complement the audio calls from the ELC system.

This solves situations where the crowd have sometimes been unsure whether a shot was out or in.

In other news, with precisely a century of days to go until the start of the Championships, organizers have further announced an increase in daily capacity at the qualifying competition in Roehampton.
