Individuals Coming Off Weight-Loss Jabs Regain Pounds Far More Rapidly Than People Using Diet and Exercise

Weight management often requires long-term strategies.

Fresh analysis indicates that people who come off new weight-loss injections like Mounjaro or Wegovy may regain shed pounds at a significantly accelerated pace than those who stop traditional lifestyle regimens.

Findings released in a major health publication points out that while overweight people can lose substantial amounts of their body weight while using the jabs, the mass comes back at an average rate of nearly a kilo each month upon discontinuation.

"Individuals using these treatments need to be aware of the danger of rapid rebound weight gain when the treatment ends," stated researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.

That rate of regain implies a return to original weight in about one and a half years.

Weighing Approaches

The analysis, which reviewed 37 of studies involving over 9,000 of patients, contrasted the effects of the injectable medications with conventional dieting.

Scientists note that individuals who lose weight through dieting usually see a more gradual creep back—approximately 100 grams monthly—post-intervention.

The Reason for the Fast Regain

Doctors propose the mechanism of the injections explains the accelerated regain.

These medications mimic a body's own chemical called glucagon-like peptide-1, which moderates feelings of fullness.

"Artificially providing GLP-1 levels several times higher than normal could lead to the system to generate a reduced amount of its own natural hormone, and may also reduce sensitivity to its effects," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics expert.

"Discontinuation of this GLP-1 'fix' results in hunger is unsuppressed, making excessive eating much more probable."

A Chronic Issue?

Medical guidelines recommend the jabs for individuals with obesity-related health risks, accompanied by recommended diet and exercise modifications.

A number of clinicians say that, considering the significant potential of relapse, the therapy might need to be life-long.

This perspective is supported by drug manufacturers, who state that the findings "underscore the long-term nature of obesity," comparing it to managing conditions like high blood pressure.

Patient Experiences

People who have come off the medication describe a powerful return of cravings.

"It was like a switch that goes on and I was suddenly ravenous," recalled a patient.

This difficulty is worsened if patients have not established lasting dietary or behavioural modifications during treatment.

Growing Interest

Figures show that millions of people in the UK have used these injections in the last 12 months, with demand being substantial.

  • Adoption is greater among females compared to males.
  • The 40s and 50s demographic shows the highest usage rates.
  • A large proportion obtain the drugs through private healthcare rather than public health services.

Ultimately, clinicians caution that while GLP-1 drugs are effective tools for weight loss, they are not a permanent solution and lasting health benefits hinges on ongoing behavioural management.
