European Union Might Retaliate to ‘Unjustified’ US Travel Restrictions, Spokesperson Says

The EU could “respond swiftly and decisively” against what it calls “unwarranted” travel bans imposed by the United States against five Europeans working on fighting online hate and disinformation, a European Commission spokesperson stated.

EU Officials Decry US Action as ‘Intimidation’

Officials from Europe such as Emmanuel Macron accused Washington of “coercion and intimidation”, following the travel bans targeted figures that were at the heart of campaigns to introduce legislation governing American tech companies.

“For far too long, ideologues in Europe have spearheaded organised efforts to coerce American platforms to suppress US perspectives they disagree with,” stated the US secretary of state in a social media post. “The current administration will not stand for these egregious acts of extraterritorial censorship.”

Widespread Condemnation From EU Nations

Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives supported the French president in criticizing the move.

The restrictions were enacted this week on a former EU commissioner who helped draft the bloc’s Digital Services Act (DSA), as well as four activists fighting false information, including two in Germany and two in the UK.

An Escalating Conflict Regarding Governance

The DSA is viewed by US officials as a type of speech restriction, whereas EU authorities contend the regulations are essential to combat inflammatory language and disinformation.

This row threatens to become a facet of a far wider existing political and ideological clash involving Washington and Europe.
