Royal Air Force Typhoon jets have conducted a mission with French aircraft in a combined operation targeting an subterranean weapons facility in Syria used by the IS group, according to the UK Ministry of Defence.

The facility, located using surveillance, was believed to be housing weapons and explosive materials, the statement said, and was positioned in mountains just above the ancient city of Palmyra in Syria's central region.

"Our aircraft employed laser-guided Paveway IV weapons to target a series of access tunnels providing entry to the site... preliminary assessments are that the target was engaged successfully," the ministry announced.

There was no sign of any harm to civilians in the attack late on Saturday and all the aircraft made a safe return, the MoD added.

The Typhoon FGR4s were supported by a Voyager refuelling tanker.

The Islamic State group - also known as Daesh - established extremist governance over large swathes of Syria and Iraq prior to its 2019 collapse.

"This strike underscores our UK leadership, and resolve to operate in unison with allied nations, to stamp out any resurgence of IS and their violent and radical beliefs in the region," UK Defence Secretary John Healey remarked.

RAF aircraft have performed patrols over Syria to "prevent any attempted resurgence" of the group subsequent to its defeat at the climactic battle in Baghuz in the year 2019, the MoD reported.

"I must thank the personnel of the UK armed forces who took part in this operation for their skill and their courage," Healey added. "They were among numerous British troops stationed over Christmas and New Year. This operation, to eliminate militants who threaten our way of life, shows how British military are always on standby, continuously, protecting the UK domestically and powerful internationally."

During December, the US military conducted what it described as a "large-scale strike" on Daesh sites in Syria, subsequent to an attack killed two American soldiers and a civilian linguist in Palmyra.

The United Nations estimates IS still boasts an estimated 5,000 to 7,000 militants in both countries.
