Britain and America have agreed to a significant bilateral deal that will preserve no duties on UK medicine exports entering the American market.

The Terms of the Accord

As part of the deal, the UK has agreed to increase expenditure on medicines through the public health system. This move guarantees that tariffs on these vital goods will stay at zero for a duration of 36 months.

This deal comes after previous threats to hike import taxes on branded drug products, with potential rates mentioned reaching one hundred percent.

"This arrangement with the UK strengthens the global environment for new treatments and brings much-needed fairness to transatlantic drug exports," a release noted.

Economic Impact

Drugs are one of the UK's largest export categories to the America, which is easily the biggest buyer for leading British pharmaceutical firms.

Trade data indicate that in the one-year period leading up to the third quarter, the UK sold drugs totaling billions to the US. This value represented a significant portion of British export trade in that timeframe.

"This deal protects work, increases investment and paves the way for the UK to emerge as a international leader for life sciences," a minister remarked.

Specific British Pledges

The deal involves several specific commitments from the United Kingdom:

  • Price Threshold Increase: The UK will increase the price threshold at which it considers new treatments to be too expensive by 25%.
  • Boosted Medicine Funding: There is a aim to increase total NHS spending on treatments from 0.3% of GDP to 0.6% over the next decade.
  • Payback Limit: The amount drug companies must pay back to the NHS to control costs will be limited at fifteen percent. Last year, rebates topped twenty percent.

Broader Context

This agreement comes amid a protracted row between the sector and the British authorities over drug pricing and NHS adoption.

These tensions were intensified by assertions that US consumers were paying a premium for the equivalent treatments than people in the UK and Europe.

Recently, several significant pharmaceutical investments in the UK have been delayed or abandoned, while multi-billion-dollar expansions have been pledged toward projects in the United States.

The Science Minister publicly accepted that the NHS must invest a greater share on drugs, noting that its spending on drugs had shrunk as a share of its total funding over the last ten years.
